This is a fun fall story that is completely entertaining for kinder through third grade classes.  A six or seven year old boy is playing a video game indoors on a beautiful fall day.  His mother makes him go outside and play just as he is about to beat level 20.  At first he hates being outside and can’t see the gorgeous fall colors surrounding him.  He goes on to meet up with some buddies and they notice that there is one leaf left on the tree they are standing near.  It is the last lucky leaf, lucky if you can catch it when it falls.  Will he catch it?  Is it really lucky? Will he beat level 20?  What follows will make young readers and gamers laugh out loud as they relate to this character and story that hits them where they live.  Lush illustrations bring out the beauty of fall colors, while the graphic cartoon speech bubbles and video game references hook in our little techies.  I highly recommend this book to early elementary readers, teachers, and librarians looking for a great fall read.       Lisa Martin, Banks Elementary Librarian, T.U.S.D.

Flight Explorer Volume 1

For students who may not be familiar with the graphic novel format, this is a nice introduction. This volume includes short stories by 10 different author/artists, each its own unique style. Because of the broad range in drawing and writing styles, students will be able to find something that they like in this volume and may be inspired to pursue more graphic novels written by particular authors. My personal favorites are “Copper: Mushroom Crossing” by Kazu Kibuishi and “Big Mouth” by Phillip Craven.
